Like in all of Haiti,
many Haitians who live around the area of “Mission de Vie” are living under the poverty line because they don’t have a steady job. Many people, especially women, try to set up small shops or work in the service industry in order to provide for their families.
A micro loan,
therefore, is a great start-up aid. Thanks to several large donations in the mid 90’s, Lebensmission was able to establish a micro credit account. Since then, hundreds of loans, averaging between 100 – 150 euro, have been given out – mostly to women. Minimal interest is charged on these loans, and almost all of the borrowers are faithful in repaying their loans.
Additionally, there are mandatory seminars,
on applicable topics, to provide the borrowers with the “know how” of how to start and manage their shop, and to help them remain independent in the long run.
